The Cumbria Mariners American Football Club are
pleased to announce that the club has been accepted in their application to
join the British American Football League, (BAFL), as an Associate member. This
means the club, which formed in September, can now play friendly games against
other BAFL teams in the UK.
Club President Paddy Gorrill of Sellafield Ltd.
said, ‘Whilst this doesn’t guarantee full league membership next year, it is a
big step towards bringing BAFL football to the people of Cumbria. The BAFL is a
national league with teams from England, Scotland and Wales competing, and we
hope that people will come to the Copeland Stadium to watch the games and
support the new team’.
The Mariners have a squad of around 30 players from
around Cumbria and the Border region, and are still looking for more players,
Player/Coach Julian ‘Ram’ Graham said, ‘Its great to see how far we have come
in less than one year. We have a great group of committed players and we are
always looking to add to the team. We are looking for players of all shapes and
sizes, if you want to come and try it out just join us at training, it’s a
sport for anyone who wants to try something new and being a summer sport its
great for anyone missing rugby and football’.

The Mariners will be assessed by the league during
friendly games in 2008 and if successful could be playing in BAFL 2 next year
alongside teams like Manchester Titans, Glasgow Tigers and Edinburgh Wolves.
The Mariners hope to host their first game at the Copeland Stadium in July.
