Ipswich Cardinals 47-0 Norwich Devils
The Norwich Devils crashed to their fourth defeat in a row, this time at the
hands of their oldest rivals the Ipswich Cardinals. The Devils struggled from
the start, and never managed to get any sustained offense going, to leave them
firmly routed to the bottom of BAFL 1 South East Conference.
The
Cardinals took the ball and started brightly; marching 69 yards on 9 plays,
culminating in a 2 yard touchdown run up the middle from running back Paul
Borstal. Ben Salibury's kick was blocked by Devils' linebacker Steve Hoskins to
keep the lead down to 6 points. After Norwich's offense went 3 and out, the
Cardinals drove down to the Norwich 9 yard line, but just as it looked like
they were about to increase their lead, they fumbled the ball and Ben Stockwell
recovered for Norwich. However, Devils' quarterback Joe Konieczny threw an
interception on the next play which was returned to the Norwich 5 yard line.
Two plays later the Cardinals did extended their lead when quarterback Donald
Byrd hit receiver Michael Royster for a 2 yard score. Salibury's kick flew wide
to the left to leave the score at 0- 2. As the first quarter came to an end the
Cardinals were again on the march, and as the second quarter began they added a
third touchdown from 20 yards out. This time they went for a 2 point conversion
but it was again Steve Hoskins who rescued Norwich, this time with a timely
tackle. The Devils defense were struggling to stop the Cardinals offense, and
on their next it was again the Byrd to Royster combination which capped the drive,
this time from 6 yards out. The two also hooked up for a 2 point conversion to
leave the Devils trailing 0 - 26 at the half.
The
second half started much as the first, with Ipswich soon moving the scoreboard
along further, taking just 5 plays to go 65 yards and with Byrd again finding
Royster, this time from 8 yards out. Salibury's kick was good to extend the
lead to 33 points. Then just before the end of the quarter Borstal ran in from
5 yards out to allow Salibury's kick to extend the lead to 40. Before the end
the Cardinals added a further score when Byrd again threw the touchdown pass to
Royster, this time from 3 yards out. Salisbury's kick completed the scoring.
The
Devils now have a week off before their next game on Sunday 14th
June when they host the Kent Exiles at the Hewitt School in Norwich, kick
off 2.30pm
