Titans Support Rock
Radio's "Bring a pound to work day"
Manchester
Titans Calendar Girl Emma took part in Rock Radio Manchester's bring a pound to
work day on the 6th November. The purpose of this event is to support the
"Manchester Million" charity based at the Christie which raises
awareness of and researches men’s cancers. Manchester Titans will be donating
the proceeds of their Cheerleader Calendar to this very worthy cause.
The cancers the Manchester Million will be raising funds for are prostate and
testicular cancer that are exclusive to men - and some like bladder and kidney
cancer which are more common in men. Collectively they represent one of the
commonest forms of malignancy and can have a devastating effect on men and
their families. There are nearly 35,000 cases of prostate cancer a year in the
UK, with 10,000 deaths. It is the biggest cancer killer in males.
Bladder cancer is the fourth commonest cancer in men, testicular cancer is the
commonest cancer in young men and kidney cancer is one of the most aggressive
cancers in men aged 45 to 55.
What is the appeal funding?
Unfortunately Manchester and the North West have some of the highest numbers of
men’s cancers in the UK. The Manchester Million, whilst raising much needed
funds, also aims to create awareness to get men to get themselves checked out.
Current funding for research into prostate cancer and men’s cancers in
Manchester and the UK is poor and needs support urgently. All money raised by
Manchester Million will go to funding much needed research at The Christie, one
of Europe's leading cancer centres with one of the largest prostate cancer
practices in the UK.
The money will also be used for training doctors and scientists in prostate,
bladder, kidney and testicular cancer treatment and research in the North West.
We want to raise the standards of men’s cancer treatment and research in
Manchester and the North West. Improved understanding of the disease and better
training of medical and scientific teams will make a huge difference. This will
help to create an awareness programme for men and their families. Many men
aren’t aware of the symptoms of prostate cancer or aggressive men’s cancers
like kidney or bladder cancer and even when they are, they are reluctant to
acknowledge them. The sooner they seek treatment, the greater the chance of
that treatment being successful.
Emma, along with several Page 3 girls took part in an awareness and fundraising
day and by all accounts bowled everyone over. Some pictures from the event are
