Past legend leads Warriors to bright future
The South Wales Warriors are delighted to announce the appointment of David Young as their new Head Coach for the 2009 season and beyond.
Coach Young brings to the club a wealth of knowledge and experience of the British game, having played a key role with the Tiger Bay Warriors in their 1999 Division Two Championship appearance. The 39 year old wide receiver and quarterback has decided to hang up his boots and concentrate on helping the Warriors achieve the league championship that has eluded them for the past few seasons.
Club Chairman Geraint Roberts commented: ‘Dai is an excellent scoop for us as a Head Coach. With the loss of a few coaching staff in the off season due to relocations, we are fortunate to have someone as qualified and as passionate about Warriors football as Dave, who is also willing to put the in considerable time and effort that is necessary to guide this team to fulfil its potential. We will miss him on the field, but we also know that he will continue to contribute a great deal to the success of this squad.’
Coach Young began his football career in South Wales, playing for the highly successful Cardiff Celts. He then went on to play for the Cardiff Cobras, Gwent Mustangs and Tiger Bay Warriors, as well as representing Wales in the Home Nations tournaments of the late 90s and early 00s. After a brief hiatus to start a family, Dai returned to the Warriors to serve on its committee and as its Wide Receivers coach for the past few seasons.
Now, on the back of two consecutive South West Divisional Championships, Coach Young is ready to take the Warriors to the next level. ‘I’m absolutely delighted to have been selected for the post. I know there were some other excellent candidates, but I also know that I will work hard to engage all of the knowledge and expertise that the Warriors sideline and backroom staff has to offer. The game in the UK is changing, and if the Warriors want to be able to excel – as opposed to just compete – then we need to change the way we approach the game. That new perspective is what I hope to bring to the table. I will really miss playing… but its time for the younger guys to take up the mantle and carry this team forward.’ Coach Young will now meet with other members of the coaching staff to discuss positional coaches for the next season, details of which will be announced shortly.
