Peterborough Saxons 17-19 Ipswich Cardinals
The Peterborough Saxons suffered their first
defeat this Sunday at the hands of BAFL 1 stalwarts, Ipswich Cardinals in a
heartbreaking encounter which saw the city side surrender an 11 point lead with
just four minutes remaining.
Down by seven, Chris Henry started the second
half with a bang, his dazzling 80 yard kick off return inspiring the visitors
and with strong defensive play keeping the Cardinals at bay, quarterback Ed
Helton got his side back in the game, hitting Ronnie Foster for his fifth
touchdown pass of the season to tie the game at 7 a piece.
Foster stood out on both sides of the ball,
recording two interceptions and a forced fumble along with Steve George and Si
Poole who recovered three Ipswich fumbles to keep the Saxons in possession.
As the fourth quarter ticked down, rookie kicker
Nick Kay nailed a 38 yard field goal and running back Adam Gumbs quick thinking,
made the most of a busted play as he passed to Dervan Alleyne for a touchdown
and a 17 – 7 lead. With just minutes left in
the game, the Cardinals showed why they’ve been such a mainstay in the division,
with two late scores snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
Down, but not out, the Saxons head to Kent this
week to face the heavily favored Exiles in what looks set to be their toughest
game to date.
