NSPCC game a roaring success
Fans and legends of BAFL graced Bedfordshire Athletics Stadium on Sunday as two of 2009’s most successful teams faced off in a fantastic fund-raising initiative, but the football wasn’t the only entertainment on offer. There were bouncy castles, DJ’s, and the rain even held off long enough for the barbeque to be a great success, as the hometown Blue Raiders hosted the Cambridgeshire Cats.
The Blue Raiders, coming off a successful campaign in Division 2, were short on numbers, and struggled to cope with the Cats spread offence. In an incredible display of skill, quarterback Tommy Durkin passed for 367 yards and a Cats record 7 touchdowns, including a beautiful 40 yard strike to Phil Day. It was a showcase for the sport, and those that attended were treated to a number of thrilling plays, including a zig-zagging run by Casey Campbell, who eluded five defenders on his way to the endzone.
Although the Cats emerged 75-6
“It was the NSPCC,” he continued, “who were the real winners on the day, and the generosity of all involved cannot go unnoticed.
This is an event that I, along with organizer Martin 'Max' Songhurst, would like to see repeated on an annual basis. On a personal note, it was great to see one of the legends of British American Football come along – defensive lineman Lawrence Lamontagne.”
Regardless of the final score, the game was played in tremendous spirit, and over £800 was raised on the day.
