Norwich Devils 0 Peterborough Saxons 25
The Norwich Devils lost their final game of the season to finish without a win in 2009, sitting bottom of the South East conference of Division 1 of the British American Football League.
The Saxons started the game strongly going 60 yards in eight plays on their opening drive and opened the scoring on a 16 yard touchdown run from running back Tim Johnson. Kicker Adam Gumbs added the extra point to open up an early seven point lead.
As the first quarter drew to a close, the Saxons extended their lead on a 31 yard pass from quarterback Doug Williams to receiver Chris Henry. This time, a bad snap meant the extra point attempt failed to leave the Saxons up by 13.
When Devils punter Stuart Utting was taken down in the backfield, the Saxons claimed the ball on the Devils' 24 yard line. From there it took them just one play to score, on a run from Anthony Amissah. Gumbs' kick went wide so the Saxons lead 19 - 0 at the half.
Towards the end of the third quarter, Peterborough started on a long drive going 76 yards on 15 plays, capped off by another Williams to Henry combination, from 17 yards out, early in the fourth quarter. Again Gumbs' kick went wide to leave the final score 25 - 0 in the Saxons' favour.
Following the game Devils Head Coach Nick Rockell announced he was stepping down from the position. Coach Rockell has been with the club for the past four seasons, the last three as head coach. In his first season as head coach, Rockell lead the team to the Division 2 championship, but the team has struggled in the last two years at Division 1 level. The club are now searching for his successor for next season.
