Over the past few months, Woodham Community Technology College have been building links with County Durham based coaching company Onside Sports and Camp Cody, an American Summer camp in New Hampshire, USA. The link is the first of its kind in the UK, which enables 16 year old students to go and coach in America for 4 weeks every summer.
In
the past anyone who pursued the idea of coaching on a summer camp in America
had to be 18. This is a unique opportunity and is available to 8 students this
year from Woodham. Four of the students that were selected via a rigorous
selection process are BAFL youth players from the 2008 BAFL British Champion Woodham Warriors (who are based at the school). The 3 boys and 1 girl from the Warriors will not just
get the chance to coach a variety of sports, but they will also have the
opportunity to coach American Football during their 4 week stay on the camp.
Jon
Tait, Assistant Head Teacher at the school and Head Coach of the Woodham Warriors American Football programme said, "This is a truly unique
opportunity for these students and one that I am sure they will never forget. Having the chance to go and coach in America at the age of 16 is amazing and is a potentially life changing experience. The leadership skills and confidence that all of these students have gained from playing American Football over the past 5 years has been a major contributing factor in these students gaining a place on this highly sought after programme".
Also going to coach on Camp Cody this summer are 4 other coaches from the Warriors. Danny Ketch is returning for his second consecutive year, whilst Adam Spanswick, Anna Watson and Karina Dixon are all travelling out to Cody for the first time. Each of these coaches are over 18, so will be spending 9 weeks on Camp.
