Edinburgh Wolves 6 Merseyside Nighthawks 15
 
 
Edinburgh’s gridiron football team were able to hold back the Merseyside offense for three quarters before finally succumbing 15-6 to the Nighthawks in a defensive struggle in Birkenhead.
 
The Wolves, who had beaten the Nighthawks 14-6 earlier this year, were unable to move the ball on their opening possession. However, Merseyside marched down the field after getting their hands on the ball, ending their drive with a 30-yard field goal. The score would remain 3-0 through the next two-and-a-half quarters as each side traded possessions.
 
Early in the fourth quarter, the Wolves marched down the field under the leadership of rookie quarterback Allan Price. Edinburgh looked to take the lead when Price connected with Campbell Lewis, but the part-time receiver, part-time play caller was unable to hold onto the ball in the endzone.
 
On the next play, the Nighthawk defense penetrated the Wolves’ backfield, sacking Price and forcing a fumble. A Merseyside defender picked the ball up and ran it the length of the field for a touchdown. Instead of being ahead by three, in a matter of seconds the Wolves were down 9-0. The deficit was extended on Merseyside’s next possession when they pushed an exhausted Wolves defense back on their heels, finally managing to run the ball in from 25-yards out to take the score to 15-0.
 
The Wolves scored a touchdown on their next possession, Lewis’s four yard run reducing the difference to nine. But the Capital side were unable to get the ball back as the Nighthawks successful maintained possession and ran the clock out.
 
Edinburgh are now 3-3 and have a week off before hosting Manchester at Meadowbank on July 5 in a battle for sole possession of third place in the division.
