Glasgow Tigers 13-7 Edinburgh Wolves
Fans of the capital's American football side witnessed
a nail-biting end to the epic battle which saw the west coast side score a last
minute touchdown to end the game 13-7.
Glasgow got off to a fierce start as they marched down the field on the back of
some long passes from quarterback Matt McCusker before running back Kieron
Phillips powered into the endzone from three yards out. Kicker Derek Russell
then added the extra point.
Although the Tigers dominated the half but could not add to their lead. Three
times the Edinburgh defense kept the Tigers out of the endzone with hard fought
tackles well inside their own twenty yard line.
Both sides then traded some costly turnovers and the half ended 7-0 to the Tigers.
Things finally started to go in the Wolves' favour in the third quarter , when defensive
back Billy Mitchell intercepted a stray pass deep in their own territory and
ran it back to midfield. From there Wolves quarterback Allan Price made a dash
for the endzone up the left sideline, but was brought down just a few yards
from the goal. A second run saw Price burst over the line for the touchdown,
with the extra point kick bringing the two sides level. With the scores
even both sides battled to take the lead but neither could find the endzone for
the crucial points.
But in the dying minutes, the Tigers threatened to score as they reached the
ten yard line, after another impressive drive but the Wolves fought to hold
them back. The Wolves pressure forced Glasgow to miss the field goal but the referee
awarded Glasgow a first down after a charge of roughing the kicker Derek Russell.
The penalty gave Glasgow another four attempts to score from close range and
quarterback Matt McCusker quickly found Scott Watson with a 15 yard pass
wide right which he took in for a touchdown. However, the Wolves hadn't given
up just yet. With just seconds remaining, Paul McEwan took the Tigers' kick and
weaved his way through the defense to reach the Glasgow 25 yard line. Edinburgh
had four more chances but were held by a solid display from the Tigers defense
and the game ended 13-7 in favour of Glasgow.
