Glasgow Tigers 10-0 Chester Romans

The Glasgow Tigers improved to 2 – 2 with this outstanding defensive performance against the previously unbeaten Chester Romans.

The Tigers and Romans found themselves locked in a defensive struggle and midway through the first quarter Glasgow linebacker Gary Smith blocked a   Chester punt, however the Glasgow offense were unable to take any advantage.

In the second quarter, led by quarterback Matt McCusker the Tigers had a 70 yard drive that was admirably stopped by the Chester defense on their own 4 yard line.

The second half was much of the same apart from a change in the Chester strategy where they reverted to the passing game, but still there was no scoring.

At the start of the fourth quarter another long Glasgow drive was finished off with a 25 yard field goal from Scott Watson. This opening score forced the Romans to really come out firing and interceptions from linebacker Rafe Shanmugam for 18 yards, and then defensive back Graham Whyte for 29 yards gave the Tigers great field position. The Glasgow side added to their score when runningback Kieran Phillips, who had 35 carries for 94 yards on the day, ran it in from the one yard line. Scott Watson kicked the extra point and the Tigers led 10 – 0.

Glasgow Head Coach Derek Taylor stated “We needed this result, the whole of my team played well today, and I’m proud of every one of them”

The Tigers next game is away against Edinburgh Wolves on 21st June. If you’re interested in playing, coaching or volunteering your time to help with any aspect of the Glasgow Tigers team, get in touch by emailing william.clark10@ntlworld.com  or phone 07742 727646
