Hampshire Thrashers took a significant step in their 2008 season as they beat a much improved Mavericks side at Winchester Rugby Club on Sunday as the summer finally arrived. Despite a significant amount of game day absentees the Thrashers coaching staff was able to shuffle the pack and record the win against a confident team from East Kent.
On the Thrashers first drive Nick Fray took the ball
through a well worked lane, shed a couple of would be tacklers and then
accelerated away to score from 47 yards out. The point after was made by
Dominic Williams to give an early led 7-0. The remainder of the quarter was one
of missed chances as receivers dropped possible touchdowns and the defenses
took charge.
The second quarter remained the same until a botched
fourth down punt left the Thrashers defending a short field. The power rushing
of the Mavericks slowly took the ball towards the endzone and a juggling catch
was made to complete the drive. With the scores level at half time both teams
knew they were in a battle.
Hampshire’s defense were the first to make an impact as a
text book tackle and strip was made by Ben Rabbett, the ball fell perfectly to
Chris Taylor who raced for a touchdown from 30 yards out.
The Hampshire defense put in another stellar performance
as the Mavericks offense was kept in check for most of the game. The pass rush
from Manny Ferreira and Alwyn Kosted pressurised the quarterback all day both
recording multiple sacks and forced fumbles.
The Thrashers now start a run of away games starting with
Reading on Sunday 18th May. The Thrashers are always looking for new
players, coaches and off field staff, so if you are interested email Head Coach
