Staffordshire Surge 14-12 Shropshire Revolution

In the first meeting on the field between the two clubs the only a few points separated the teams throughout a tense contest.

The Surge scored on their first drive with a 14 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Richard Large to tight end Steve Ward. Ward kicked what would turn out to be the crucial the extra point. The Surges’ celebrations were cut short when the Revolution stuck back with a 47 yard kickoff return touchdown. Importantly the extra point kicked was too low.

For the next two quarters the potentially potent offenses of both teams were stiffed by the high quality of the tackling and penalties. Halfway through the fourth quarter Staffordshire scored their second touchdown when Large connected with his other tight end Chris Ward for a 16 yard pass. Steve Ward converted the extra point for a 14 – 6 lead.

Again the home responded with a big play as quarterback James Horn scored with a 52 yard pass. The Revolution went for the 2 point conversion to even the score but after three penalties Horns 2 point conversion pass fell incomplete.

With time running out Shropshire battled to overcome the Surge defense. However in the last two minutes of the game Chris Ward made a one handed interception giving the Surge offense a first down, which allowed them to run out the clock.
