Staffordshire Surge 29-0 Doncaster Mustangs

The Staffordshire Surge achieved their third win of the season with out conceding any points as they beat Doncaster Mustangs 29 – 0 at Stoke Rugby Club to keep them top of the British American Football League Division 1 Northern Conference.

In the Surge’s first drive running back Brett Rosenbaum made gains of 13 and 16 yards which was followed by a 28 yard pass by Richard Large to Joe Stearn. The rookie receiver was tackled just short of the goal line and on the ensuing play Rosenbaum scored on a 2 yard run. On Staffs next possession Large struck again with a 38 yard pass to Neil Sullivan. The Surge quarterback dived into the end zone with the ball himself for a 1 yard touchdown.

From then on the Mustangs defense held firm and in the third quarter they intercepted a long pass by Large near their goal line. However the Mustangs offense fumbled the ball in their end zone, which was recovered by rookie linebacker Ashley Mills for the Surge’s third touchdown. On the ensuing extra point attempt a high snap forced kicker Jon Wood to throw a pass, which was caught by tight end James Tucker for 2 points.

In the fourth quarter the Mustangs defensive pressure paid off with 3 sacks but a fumble recovery by Surge linebacker Adam Steele gave the home team excellent field position and Large capitalized with a 1 yard touchdown pass to tight end Chris Ward. Wood completed the scoring with his third extra point conversion kick.

The Surge travel to Scotland this Sunday to play the West Coast Trojans and the youth team will be training at Northwood Stadium.

The club is still looking for new players and volunteers for this season. Contact coach John Farmiloe on 01782 619089 for more information.
