It’s a family affair....

The Maidstone Pumas closed the book on their 2009 scrimmage matches with a final trip to the Colchester Gladiators. The Pumas’ staff was looking to test the team’s ability to implement corrections as well as to test their ability to adjustment to completely different packages from what they saw in the Saxons’ scrimmage.

Offensively, the Gladiators seemed to be in midseason form and came out firing on all cylinders. Their running game is in a class of its own, and despite playing the Gladiators twice last year, the Pumas defense struggled initially against strong and intelligent offensive plays. In order to match their speed, the Pumas put in their slimmed down defensive line which was led by new players Curtis “Red Card” Farrell, and yet another Shepherd, defensive end, Gavin Shepherd.

Coach Navarro had high praise for the two new defenders, “They’ve both come a long way in a short space of time. This is the first game for Gavin, and only the second for Curtis. Many people would see that as a negative, but I see the good that comes from with it, they are both very eager, and neither comes with any preconceived notions of greatness. I think offensive linemen will have a lot of trouble dealing with their speed.”

Not to be out done by the Shepherd brothers, the Clive family trotted out another of their members (with more to come!) to great applause. Sean “No Name Jr.” Clive saw his first action at defensive back and in what is quickly becoming a family tradition of theirs he made the hardest hit of the day. It was one of those hits that got the attention of the whole sideline, and the coaching staff could be seen chirping like school children after the hit.

On offense, the Pumas worked hard to deliver on the game plan which they will use for the season. Andy “Tank” Garland had some positive runs, and the sure hands of Matt Hulbert were on display yet again. “Offensively, we’ve still got a ways to go, but things are slowly coming together,” said Coach Navarro.

The coaching staff felt there were a lot of positives to take away from the day, and it seems like the team is gelling just in time for the start of the season. Coach Navarro was quoted as saying, “We now have a very good idea of who we can count on in given situations, and with the players growing faith in the coaching staff and the game plan we have the makings of an exciting team. I’ve also been thinking that since my team is heavy in Clive’s and Shepherds, I am going to look into government funding for their parents, we need to get a jump start on the next generation of Pumas.”

The Pumas would like to thank, Colchester for the scrimmage and hope that the two teams will meet again later in the season in the play off’s.
