Pirates sign on new crew
The East Kilbride Pirates held two open sessions on 22 and 29 November, designed to recruit new players for the team’s 2010 season.
Ahead of the events, Pirates’ players, staff and supporters hit the busy city centre streets of
Everyone who attended the sessions had a great time, and as a result the team managed to pick up many new senior players and a number of new under-18s, who will be able to make a significant contribution to the Pirates for the 2010 season and beyond.
At the tryout days, the prospective players were taken through every position in the game with a quick taster in each to learn some skills and some drills.
Head Coach Andy Mackintosh, who organised the sessions, said: “This offseason the priority is to grow in strength and depth at every position for the Senior team, and to start our Youth and Junior teams so they can play friendlies next year and look to compete in the BAFL league in 2011.”
Junior football is five man and Youth is 11 man. To be able to play games with those teams, the Pirates are still looking for ten Junior players, aged 14-16 years, and 30 Youth players, aged 16-18 years.
Andy added: “We still have a long way to go before we can field those teams, but we’ve started and will continue to grow.”
Although no more tryout sessions are planned, Pirates Chairman Matthew Davies is keen to point out that potential players of all ages are always welcome: “We’re continuously on the lookout for new recruits, and anyone who’s interested should get in touch or drop by to meet the team and find out more at one of our training sessions, which start up again in January. Experience isn’t necessary – so don’t be put off if you haven’t played before.”
