On Sunday 17th November, the East Kilbride Pirates held the first of two rookie introduction days as part of their continuing hunt for new players for the 2009 campaign.

The day saw a strong turnout of new talent taken through a series of drills by the Pirates impressive coaching staff. The session began with Pirates Chairman Matthew Davies introducing Scotland’s Number One American football team and discussing the sport in the UK. Attendees heard about the Pirates and their recent strong representation in the GB Lions team which defeated France 13-6 last week in Amiens.

Next, the Pirates coaches took the players outside where they ran through a series of typical American Football drills to illustrate the kinds of skills that Pirates players are expected to display. Rookie Chas Stockwell, 18, said “I’ve watched the sport for years on TV and it’s great to finally try it out. I really enjoyed today.”

A second session for new players will take place on December 14th, again from 12noon-3:00pm at Duncanrig Sports Centre, East Kilbride. Attendees need footwear suitable for astro turf and sports clothing suitable for being outdoors in the winter. Players of all ages, abilities and levels of fitness are encouraged to attend. Pads, helmet and gum shield are not necessary. If you’re interested in attending or getting involved with the Pirates in any way, please email info@piratesfootball.co.uk.
