With the challenge of playing in the new British American Football League Premier Division, the East Kilbride Pirates have augmented their setup with new coaches to challenge for the league Championship. Linebacker Gary Chalmers takes over from former Defensive Co-ordinator Steve “Duck” Collins, who is now working with the Great Britain squad. Chalmers has previous experience as Pirates Defensive Co-ordinator, but this season will see him take sole responsibility for returning the defense to its previous dominant form. He will be assisted in a player coach role by last season's Most Valuable Player for the Pirates, Jim Dorman. Dorman will shape a new and exciting group of defensive lineman, while Chalmers will look after the linebackers and defensive backs.

The offense also has a new co-ordinator as Andrew Mackintosh, from Rutherglen, makes the step from player to coach. Formerly a successful linebacker with the Pirates, Andy shared his wealth of playing and coaching experience as Assistant Head Coach with the North Lanarkshire Rams and recently coached the wide receivers with the Scotland Youth team. Relishing the new challenge, Andy knows that the Pirates are set for their toughest season yet.

On playing in a division comprised solely of Britain’s best teams, Mackintosh commented “I know it is a huge challenge but I have been working on the playbook and offense for some time now and believe I have put together what can be a successful unit.” Mackintosh will not be alone in coaching the offense. Former Glasgow Lions quarterback Darryn Trainor will be coaching the receivers and quarterbacks and has been working together to formulate the new playbook. He will also have the services of player-coach and Pirates veteran Ian Smith who has been the Offensive Line Coach for several years.

The new look Pirates play their first home game on Sunday 13th of May at Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds, kick off at 14:30. The Pirates are always looking for new players and keen hands willing to get involved in any capacity.
