West Coast Trojans 20 -41 Doncaster Mustangs

The Doncaster Mustangs were victorious over the West Coast Trojans at the Keepmoat Athletics Arena on Sunday and now occupy third place in the BAFL 1 North Conference. It’s very much a case of ‘one game at a time’ but with four games in the schedule remaining, the chances of a Play Off place are now realistic and the Mustangs destiny is in their own hands.

West Coast came to Doncaster in need of a victory after their poor start to the season which had seen them win just 1 game out of 4. Things started well for the visitors after an early intercepted pass gave them possession of the football.   This turned into a score and the Trojans lead 6-0 early. The Mustangs strength this year however is their impressive running game and they were soon level after League leading rusher Joey Fabrizio carried into the endzone from 7 yards out.   The extra point made it 7-6 to the Mustangs at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started with the Trojans in possession and on fourth and goal from the 15 they were able to score on a draw play that had the Mustangs defense flat footed. What followed however was a dominant period from the Mustangs which saw them score five unanswered touchdowns.   Fabrizio added another three scores, with carries of 7, 9 and 40 yards and quarterback Graham Lightfoot was able to find receivers Dayne Robinson and Martyn Lee with 20 and 60 yard grabs respectively.

The Trojans rallied, but a late score was minor consolation.   The Mustangs defense forced 6 consecutive ‘3 and outs’ in the second and third quarters and with the offense able to move the ball at will they ended the day a demoralised unit.

Mustangs MVP honours on offense went to Joey Fabrizio after his 4 touchdown display and on defense, Steve Egbury who lead the team well and was leading tackler on the day.

The Mustangs travel to Dundee next week and then after a couple of weeks break are back at the Keepmoat Athletics Arena to face the table topping East Kilbride Pirates on Sunday 12th July.   The support of the Doncaster sporting public will be needed against the Pirates who have destroyed everyone who has stood in their path this year, so if you’ve never seen American football come along and enjoy the action.   Kick off is 2.30pm and admission is £3 for Adults, U16 £1 and U10 free.
