Mustangs go back to their roots
Posted in: Doncaster Mustangs    By Martyn Richmond Feb 17, 2009 - 7:04:40 PM

At the end of the 2006 season, the Mustangs took the decision to change their name from Doncaster to South Yorkshire.  It was an acknowledgement that the team was made up of players from all over the region and not just one town.  It was also in the hope that they would appeal to a wider audience of potentential sponsors.  However, on reflection, it seemed that almost all the players would have been happy to stick with the 'Doncatser' title.

"We consulted with a number of parties about changing the name back, not least the Senior members at the club" said GM Mark Blyth.  "It was never a decision I was in favour of in the first place and it seems that was the view of a number of people I confide in at the club.  The decision to switch back was a fairly easy one" he added.

Ironically, since the reversal of name, the club has picked up it's first sponsor of 2009.  Kelham Island Brewery, based in Sheffield, have stepped forward to become the Mustangs Gameday MVP Sponsor.  Each recipient of the award at home games will recieve a case of the brewery's award winning beer in recognition for their efforts on the field.  The company's Head Brewer, Ian Kenny, who was a guest at the club's recent Race Night also added a brewery visit for the team as part of the deal.

The Mustangs have also appointed a new Head Coach following the departure of Andrew Patel at the end of the 2008 season.  He is the former Mustangs Offensive Lineman, Pete Scorah.

Scorah was part of the Offensive Line on the Division 2 Championship winning team in 2004 and was an original member of the team formed in late 2002.  He left the club in 2005 to set up the Hull Hornets in his hometown but left them in 2008 for personal reasons.

"Pete has always been a Mustang at heat and we are delighted to welcome him back into the family" said Blyth.  "He is a slightly larger than life character and we are confident his enthusiasm will rub off on the rest of the team"

The 2009 schedule has been released with the Mustangs starting at home at the Keepmoat Stadium when the visitors are the Merseyside Nighthawks.  More details about the team and schedule will be available online when the club launches it's brand new website in a few weeks.
