The twenty-two man squad of the East Kent Mavericks put up another strong performance against a sideline filling squad of the Colchester Gladiators. Mavericks, had 4th string quarterback, Adam 'flipper' Lillis, leading his team up the field and almost into the end zone on a couple of occasions. However, it was the defense that came out playing particularly strongly so that at half-time the score was tied at 0-0.
However, in the second-half the size of the Gladiators squad began to show as they went ahead 6-0. Two further scores in the final quarter led to a 20-0 score line, but the Mavericks grit shone through again with offensive lineman, John 'ugly' Hunt, coming on for the defensive line, hurried the Gladiator's quarterback, who threw an interception to Maverick's Richie Store, which was run to the one-yard line, allowing the offence to run in for some pride in the last few seconds. Making the end score 20-6.
Mentions need to go to Adam Lillis who started his first game at quarterback and completed 11 of 20 for 135 yards and David Murphy who was returning from a broken arm and caught 8 passes for 94 yards.
