East Kent Mavericks close to big win
Posted in: East Kent Mavericks    By John Hunt Jul 17, 2006 - 5:42:00 PM

The East Kent Mavericks are very close to a big win. That is the feeling within the team and also the opinion of the officials who refereed the match between the Mavericks and the Cambridgeshire Cats on Saturday. One official approached Mavericks Head Coach, Bob Matthews, at the end of the game and stated that he couldn’t believe that the newly formed East Kent team had not won a game yet, based on some very strong performances.

And Saturday’s game was another nail biter for the Mavericks, as their diminished squad took on the Cambridgeshire Cats. And once again the Mavericks showed a lot of skill and heart.

Things started well for the rookie Mavericks, with a score on their first drive. Jon Newman received the hand off from back-up quarterback Lee Walsh and ran in for short yardage, despite some heavy goal line defence from the Cats.

The Mavericks continued to play hard with some big plays being made by the defence. Dudley Ross’s new pads, for example, were certainly getting warmed up as he made some smashing tackles.

At the half the score was 6 - 6 and the Mavericks saw the opportunity for their first victory. However, it wasn't to be as the Cats got 3 further scores in the second half. But the Maverick spirit, which they are becoming renowned for shone through to the end, as the mavericks carried the ball the length of the pitch to score on what was to be the last play of the game. This time Michael ‘Buster’ Keefe powered through the Cats defences to score a great last ditch touchdown.

Although there were only 8 seconds left on the clock after Busters touchdown, the Mavericks still had the guts to go for an onside kick and attempt a cheeky last gasp drive for the Cats end zone. Unfortunately, the kick was recovered by the Cats to end the game: Mavericks 12 - Cats 26.

Mavericks’ man of the match was Michael 'Buster' Keefe who started on defence and got 8 solo tackles and ended up playing running back and achieved 25 yards off 5 carries and scored a touchdown.

With players like this giving heart and soul to the team, the Mavericks turn their attention to their next home match at Keynes College, University of Kent, Canterbury on Sunday 23rd July where they will meet the Norwich Devils with relish.
