Christmas Cracker for Colts

Lancashire youngsters will soon be able to try American Football and then play for their local club, thanks to a new National Lottery-funded project.

The Lancashire Wolverine Colts Youth American Football team (Age 16-19) received a huge boost this Christmas when they received over £7000 funding from Sport England. The grant will be used purchase twenty five complete sets of kit and specialist training equipment for the club’s ‘Rookie Camp’. Development Director for the Lancashire Academy of American Football, Caroline Freeman, was thrilled to hear of the successful grant application, saying: “American football is an expensive sport and unfortunately money often serves as a barrier for potential players. We are really pleased that Sport England has approved our bid for funding. This grant will widen participation in the sport of American Football in Lancashire.”

Anne Boyd, Sport England’s Regional Lead for Lancashire, said: “The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug. The Lancashire Wolverines Rookie Camp is a great way for younger people to try American Football and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved.”

The Lancashire Wolverine Colts are the Youth Kitted team representing the Lancashire Academy of American Football, and are open to all players aged 16 to 19. The Colts are coming off a particularly successful season, having finished second in Great Britain during the 2009 season and are looking to build on that success during 2010.

The Wolverines ‘Rookie Day’ will be held on January 10th 2010 for any new players interested in playing American Football. No previous experience of American Football is required and all equipment will be provided. If you would like to attend the Rookie Camp, we ask that all players register their interest with Head Coach, Geoff Leigh at coltshc@wolverineden.com.

The Lancashire Wolverines senior team (age 19+) will also be carrying out their Rookie Camp on 10th January following the Colts' Rookie Camp, and any players interested in attending this should contact Head Coach, Paul Horsburgh at headcoach@wolverineden.com.
