The Coventry Cassidy Jets senior flag team roared into the play offs at the weekend when they defeated the Chichester Sharks 58-34. The victory avenged a 47-18 defeat earlier in the season and combined with other results saw the Jets leapfrog the Sharks and secure the second and final play off berth in the English Conference. Quarterback Neil Balthazaar was instrumental in the victory throwing 7 touchdown passes to give him a total of 20 for the season.

Coventry jumped out to a 16-0 lead behind touchdown passes to Dax Michelena and Mark Cohen but sloppy defense allowed the Sharks to pull back within 3 points. The Jets went in 22-13 up at the half after Balthazaar found McCook wide open in the endzone. Balthazaar extended the lead when he hit first, Michelena and then McCook either side of a third score for Neil Henderson and the visitors from the south coast.

Outstanding young talent McCook.
Cohen provided one of the plays of the day after Henderson had pulled the Sharks to within 8 but the extra point conversion was picked off by the giant receiver in his own endzone before he returned it the length of the field to keep the Jets two scores ahead. McCook was next to run the length of the field when he took a Henderson pass back all the way to put the game out of reach. Balthazaar threw two more scoring strikes to Michelena as Coventry completed the memorable victory.

Scottish Champions the Kirkcaldy Bulls stand in the way of the Coventry Cassidy Jets and a place in the inaugural BAFL Flag Final. In the other semi–final the Leicester Eagles face the Carluke Cobras with both matches and the final being played at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday September 6th.
