The Coventry Cassidy Jets first foray into senior flag football got off to a good start as they chalked up two victories in less than ideal conditions. As the rain consistently fell over Kent the Jets notched back to back wins, first 32-18 against the hosting Kent Exiles and then 36-19 versus the West Kent Wing Dings.

A slick field and a sodden football couldn’t slow down the Jets offense as Canadian quarterback Neil Balthazaar completed his first 3 passes for touchdown scores, hitting receiver David Sonne twice either side of a touchdown strike to Bryan Over. The Exiles fought on and thanks to the Jets inability to put the shackles on the big plays were still in the contest at half time as a passing touchdown and long run made the score 18-12.

The Exiles struck first blood in the second half to tie the score and were buoyed by holding the Jets on their next possession. The home side’s hopes of victory were short lived as free safety Bryan Over grabbed his second interception of the game returning this one for a touchdown. Over was on the receiving end of Balthazaar’s extra point pass to extend the Jets lead to seven. Balthazaar would add to the score further as his pass to Sonne completed the wide receivers hat trick. Over again added the extra point as the Jets held out for the 32-18 win.

Coventry’s second match up saw the Jets pitted against the Wing Dings who had earlier defeated the Exiles 26-13. Balthazaar again led the Jets to an early lead with touchdown lobs to Steve Podmore and 2 long bombs to Over, converting all three 2 point attempts Coventry had a commanding 24-0 lead. The Wing Dings managed a score on a long run before Balthazaar hit Over once again.

The boys from West Kent responded with their best drive of the day resulting a converted touchdown before Andrew Smith found himself alone in the endzone for his first touchdown of the day. The Wing Dings scored a late consolation when they returned an interception the length of the field to make the final score 36-19.
