After a series of unlucky defeats, the Cambridgeshire Cats finally earned their first victory of the 2006 season with a 22-0 win on Sunday over the visiting Maidstone Pumas. The hottest day of the year promised to make things tough for both teams, but the Cats’ running game got off to a great start early on, with fullback Stephen Morrison recording an astonishing 200 yards and two touchdowns. The Cambridgeshire defence was suffocating, allowing just three first downs over the course of the game and a mere handful of yards. The visitors did their best to rally, but the oppressive weather on Coldhams Common and the relentless driving of the Cats’ offensive line proved too much to overcome.
Cambridgeshire will play their next game on June 25, when they host their cross-county rivals, the East Midlands Saxons, who are based in Peterborough. The game promises to be electrifying, and the Cats would like to welcome any supporters down to Coldhams Common for a 2.30pm kick-off.
