Cats promote Palmer to DC
The
Cambridgeshire Cats are delighted to announce Ray Palmer as their new Defensive
Co-ordinator. Palmer came to the Cats in 2006 and made an immediate impact,
receiving the season MVP award for his efforts at linebacker, tight-end and
fullback. The respect he commanded from his team-mates was illustrated when he
followed this up by sharing the Players’ MVP award in his second season with
The Cats in 2007. By 2008 Palmer was an integral part of a defense that
conceded less than one touchdown per game during Ray’s playing career with the
Cats, and a Co-Defensive MVP award gave him a third successive annual award to
add to his mantelpiece, capping off a career that saw him reach 97 tackles (9.5
for loss), 238 all purpose yards and 3 touchdowns (1 rush, 1 reception, 1
fumble recovery).
CatsTalk
recently had opportunity to speak to Ray about his career and his future plans:
Ray:
I started playing football back in the mid
eighties when the 49ers were Kings of the NFL on Channel 4. The first team I
played for was the Luton Junior Flyers in 85 & 86. This was closely
followed by the South Herts Seminoles in 87, another youth kitted team. I began
playing senior football in 88 spending 2 years at the Luton Flyers. 90 to 94
were my most successful years when I played for the Bedford Bombardiers; two
finals in 93 and 94 against the Bournemouth Buccaneers and MK Pioneers. Injury
in 95 cut my career short until I got the bug again in ’98 and played a season
with the London Mets; finishing in a semi final loss to the Southern Sundevils.
Head
Coach Shaw is excited by the Cats latest appointment as he assembles his
sideline team for the 2009 season: “
Ray is
respected for his knowledge and work ethic and this signing is an integral part
in compiling our Defensive Coaching staff”.
The Cats assault on BAFL 2009 is gaining momentum with every week, with
