Nottingham Caesars celebrate 25 years of American football in the East Midlands 1984 to 2009

Formed in 1984 by Barry Boseley, and playing youth flag football, the Nottingham Caesars took their first foot steps into the world of American football. Contrary to popular belief the Caesars were not named after the famous Roman Emperor Caesar but the more infamous gang lead by Al Capone, who were known as the Little Caesar. The main reason for the name was that when players reached the age that they could play senior football they transferred to the Nottingham Hoods who were the senior football side at the time. Following two successful seasons of flag football Barry decided to step up to youth full kitted football, again acting as a feeder team for the Nottingham Hoods.

1994 saw Barry deciding to venture into senior football and to break away from the Hoods connection. Due to league rules the Caesars had a variety of homes around Nottinghamshire finally moving back into Nottingham in 1997 During their 14 years as a senior side the Caesars have played in 2 Bowl Finals and have made the play offs 10 times.
As students of American football in the UK are aware the sport has had a turbulent history, the late eighties saw the game at the height of its popularity, but it has had many ups and downs since then. 2009 finds the Caesars in great shape, and still lead by Team Owner and Head Coach Barry Boseley. Having completed two very successful seasons in BAFL 2, 2009 sees the Caesars promoted to BAFL 1, and returning to the spiritual home of American football in Nottingham the Harvey Hadden Stadium.
A look through the archives sees very few teams have managed to play American football continuously for 25 years in the UK, and it is a testament to Barry Boseley’s hard work and enthusiasm for the game that sees the Caesars achieve this unique mile stone.
