Wolverines and Knights entered the stadium to a fanfare and good sized crowd going mad, music booming and fans cheering. The atmosphere was amazing and truly, I’m glad I was there to witness it.
Wolverines won the toss and elected to defer so kicked off. A reception on the twenty yard line was returned almost by number 21, Dominic Gould, to the Wolverines twenty-five yard line. Gould, with two runs took no time getting to the endzone with Joe Thompson, Quarterback for the Knights sneaked into the endzone. Point after touchdown was good; 8-0 Knights. Wolverines looked to get a quick score and seemed to be threatening but a flag for offensive pass interference pulled them back. Wolverines, unable to move the ball were forced to punt and their defense held the Knights who also punted putting Wolverines offense on the four yard line at the end of the first quarter.
Neither team could move the ball to any effect and the half came to an end 8-0 Knights.
Second half, Wolverines took the ball from kick off, but penalties and in-completions meant they had to punt away. Knights, trying to move the ball, seemed to catch the same stutter as Wolverines and were soon forced to punt the ball. Wolverines backed up to their endzone, failed to move the ball and had to punt from the one yard line. Pressure from the Knights blocked the punt in the endzone and out the back taking the score to 10-0. From the punt kick Nick Olive ran the ball back to the Wolverine thirty two yard line.
Knights, pressurized the Wolverine defense on the three yard line first and goal. Wolverine defense held firm and forced the Knights to attempt a field goal. Hoo took the shot but it went wide. Wolverines started the next drive on the twenty yard line. Number 32, Hodson, brought up first down as Wolverines looked to get some offense going but a fifteen yard penalty forced Wolverines to punt again. Knights moved into the Wolverine half with a Quarterback keeper but he stayed down with cramp. Nick Olive, now under centre, handed off to Jean-Paul Jones up the middle for a gain of eight yards and Thompson, now recovered returned, and Jones for the first down. Gareth Bentir-Davies, number 25, on a counter, bounced for a first down and Knights were now threatening.
On the four yard line Knights drove the ball in with number 33, Jerry Mahachi, making the score 16-0. Point after touchdown failed. Wolverines, from the kick off, played valiantly, but the Knights were not planning on letting them back into the game, so with fourth and fourteen go for it on fourth down. Number 22 moved the chains but from Wolverines’ first decent field position could not move it into the red zone.
Knights were happy to run the ball and the clock to close out the game. Final score 0-16 to the Farnham Fast Lane Knights Youth.
MVP: Farnham Fast Lane Knights Youth number 25, Gareth Bentir-Davies
