Aztecs rookies welcome Banshees to BAFL

The Bristol Aztecs welcome West Country neighbours, the Gloucester Banshees, to the BAFL fraternity this Saturday at Plock Court in Gloucester. Recently accepted as a BAFL associate team, the Banshees will host the Bristol Aztecs in a showcase game in an effort to gain full BAFL membership status for the 2009 season.

The Aztecs headed east along the M4 corridor to Aldershot Army Stadium for a return fixture against the Farnham Fast Lane Knights, determined to reverse a 26-6 opening week home defeat and a 9 year losing streak at the hands of the Knights.

After two tough early season losses to the much fancied Farnham Fast Lane Knights and Coventry Cassidy Jets, the Bristol Aztecs were rare favourites against the Gateshead Senators.

Aztecs shot down by Jets

In their short existence, the Coventry Cassidy Jets have become regular opponents for the Aztecs, and so far every game has been an occasion.   The series began in the 2006 BAFL Division 1a Final, and the latest chapter was a Jets 14-6 win in the BAFL Premier Division semi-final in 2007.    With such history, albeit recent, both teams were anticipating a ferocious game.

Opening Day Blues

Aztecs versus Knights has been a regular opening day fixture for the boys from Bristol, with the ‘Tecs opening their seasons against the Knights in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, and now 2008. The Knights eased through the previous encounters, this year however, after a third place finish in BAFL Premier in 2007, the Aztecs were confident of a closely fought game.
