The Plymouth Admirals begin training for their 2008 BAFL campaign this Sunday and Head Coach Steve Perry is confident that the club can build on their highly constructive off-season recruitment.
Taking a break from his preparations for the upcoming weekend, Perry emphasised that the past 4 months work was only the beginning of what he hopes will be his most successful season as Head Coach.

“The Rookie Camps we held in November and December last year played host to over 40 potential new players eligible for the adult side. This is a great start for us and together with the email and phone enquiries we’ve had there’s a real possibility of having a decent sized squad for 2008.”

“But this will only happen if we continue to attract more and more new talent into the club, so we will continue to convey the message that new players are always wanted and always welcome. Last season we had several players who came along just to ‘give it a go’. Some were a little nervous at first, but after a few hours of work with the current team they soon realised what you can get out of playing a sport like ours.”

Club Captain Mel German was quick to back up his Head Coach. “People often think they’re too small, slow, out-of-shape or old to play American football. This is a big mistake, and the diversity of last year’s squad really demonstrates what can be achieved with the proper coaching.”

After a succession of rained off sessions last February, the club have made provisions for use of an all-weather surface in case there is a repeat of the deluge suffered last year.

“No session is ever totally cancelled at the Admirals” said Secretary Paula Dodds. “We will always adapt in some way, and an all-weather surface really opens up new options for us.”

Sunday’s session begins at 11:00am at the YMCA Centre on Honicknowle Lane.
